August 22, 2014 – Lyle Giffin, local farmer, entrepreneur, and CEO of the Giffin group of companies, unveiled plans for a new corn seed production company in Blenheim recently, during his closing remarks at the annual Country Farm Seeds customer appreciation event.
The company, which will be called C & L Seed Production Inc., will specialize in wholesale corn seed production, focusing most of its production energies on small lots. It will be owned and operated by two of the area’s prominent farming families – the Giffins, Lyle and Lee and the Stewarts, Chris, Craig, Dale of Jon Ern Farms.
The Giffin family name has long been synonymous with corn production in Southwestern Ontario. Lyle Giffin, a longtime Harwich township farmer, started in the seed business more than 40 years ago, setting the standard for quality corn varietals for more than three decades. Similarly, the Stewart family is a multigenerational farming family with experience in black tobacco and have grown processing tomatos, along with seed corn.
C & L Seed Production will see Lee Giffin and Chris, Craig and Dale Stewart following in the fertile footsteps of their fathers. Together, the farmers have more than 90 years of experience between them; Chris Stewart is also a past board member of the Seed Corn Growers of Ontario.
Construction on the C & L Seed Production facility is scheduled to begin early this fall. Timelines have the processing facility fully functional and operating in time for the 2015 harvest.
