Did you know that in many grade school classes in Ontario, students are issued their own personal ipad or tablet to do their school work? And that many workplaces have innovative uses for technology that require proficiency with these tablets? Times are changing quickly!
At the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus, we are committed to ensuring our graduates are developing all the skills they need to succeed and lead the next generation of innovation. We currently do not have any tablets for use by students on campus. You can help us lead the change.
As just one example of their expected use, the Human Resources Management class (all 2nd year agriculture, horticulture, and environment students) uses the Canadian Agricultural Human Resources Council’s (CAHRC) online agriHR Toolkit (see http://www.cahrc-ccrha.ca/resources/agricultural-hr-toolkit) as their ‘textbook’. It is a live resource, a national standard in agriculture, and it engages students with thepractical application of HR practices and policies.
We are asking your support to purchase tablets for applied learning classes each week in order to:
- a) Equalize access to developing the skill of using online resources (many students do not have access to a tablet, or even a current laptop computer).
- b) Practice using these professional resources in an applied manner. For example, if a small dairy farmer is looking for one person to hire, she or he goes to the agHR Toolkit, uses the templates (with guidelines) to develop the job description and the job advertisement. These can be saved and used in real applications. These tools and resources are always in context, so as things change, our graduates are up-to-date on the latest regulatory changes and best practices. In this example, that includes where to advertise online for the job, how to reach a broader candidate pool, what you can ask and not ask in an interview, and more.
- c) Learn how to use technology in the workplace in a disciplined, responsible manner. Internet access does not mean going to Facebook or other social media in the middle of an assignment! Students will practice responsible use of tablets in the classroom, to prepare them to do the same at work.
