We are headed into year three of the Farm to School program in Chatham-Kent. The program provides students in 16 local schools with fruits and vegetables 4-5 days a week from March to June 2016. Fruits and vegetables are picked up from local farmers/producers and delivered to these schools where they will be cleaned, prepared and delivered to all students in the school free of charge.
What do we need from you?
As a local farmer/producer, we are asking that you consider filling in the attached request form for information and return it by Tuesday February 2, 2016. We are looking to source the fruits and vegetables provided to the schools from local farmers/producers as a way to encourage use of local foods.
While this program runs for part of the school year, we collect this information from growers to increase our knowledge of the available fruits and vegetables locally throughout the year. This helps us in planning for future expansion.
It is very important to us that this program be sustainable; support our local farmers/producers and the Chatham-Kent economy so we are asking that you also include information about cost per unit purchased. This will allow us to budget for all input costs associated needed to run this program. This information will be updated on an annual basis as we realize that pricing will fluctuate but this information provides us with a base amount from to start a budget for our project.
