If you are looking where to locate and purchase local foods, do I have the map for you! The Buy Local! Buy Fresh! Map is available and includes 44 producers and agri-businesses located throughout Chatham-Kent.
The map lists the various producers, what they have to offer, where they are located, when they are open, as well as contact information. This is the fifth edition of the Buy Local! Buy Fresh! Map, which began nine years ago with 11 vendors. This shows the growth of our production of local foods and also the demand from consumers for fresh and locally grown food products.
If you have never seen this map, I would encourage you to pick one up and be amazed at what we have here in Chatham-Kent.
The Buy Local! Buy Fresh! Map is a great community initiative with sponsorship from the Kent Federation of Agriculture, Farm Credit Canada, J. Adams Industrial Forklifts, Uher’s Performance Feeds, Southwest Regional Credit Union, Laila Farrell Communications and Marketing, and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent Economic Development Services. Thank you to each of these sponsors for their support of local food production.
This map of Chatham-Kent products features dozens of various fruits and vegetables; many varieties of plants, flowers, and trees; all kinds of meat and fish; agri-tourism; eggs; maple syrup; honey; jams, jellies and sauces; wine; beer and much more.
These maps are free and you can pick one up at municipal service centers, local libraries, tourism outlets, local agricultural businesses, and at the sites listed on the map.
If you cannot find one, e-mail me and I will make sure you get one. Or you can download the map from this website: www.
A few of our local food products that are on the map are available, including asparagus rhubarb and strawberries. And there are always many other local food products on the market all year round, such as meat and poultry products, eggs, various fruits and vegetables, maple syrup, fish, home baked goods, and so much more.
As consumers, we all need to be aware of where our food comes from. Providing safe and healthy food for yourself and your family is important.
So make sure you pick up the Buy Local! Buy Fresh! Map. We should show our support to our own producers and businesses all year round wherever possible. After all, this is their livelihood.
When we support them, we are supporting much more, including the workers, the drivers who deliver the produce, and the companies who supply these farmers with their crop inputs. And the list goes on and on.
Agriculture in Chatham-Kent is over a $3-billion sector. Let’s keep this growing and growing. We all can be a part of this so let’s continue to show our support.
