The leader of the Official Opposition, Tom Mulcair, made the following statement on the closure of the Leamington Heinz plant:
“I was saddened to hear of the closure of the Leamington Heinz plant after over a century of doing business in the community of Leamington, Ontario. This sudden announcement comes as a blow to Leamington, the surrounding communities and the agricultural sector that will be impacted.
This processing plant garnered Leamington the moniker of the tomato capital of Canada. It supported good paying jobs as well as a strong and vibrant agricultural sector and was Leamington’s biggest employer and taxpayer. My thoughts are with the thousands of workers and their families who will no doubt bear the brunt of this news.
Sadly though this closure comes as no surprise. In the 2012 budget Conservatives unilaterally altered Canada’s food container regulations; These Canadian standards helped sustain these important jobs. These changes were brought forward without study or consultation, but worst of all, they were made without considering the communities that would be affected.
For too long Canadians have watched Stephen Harper sit idly as good paying Canadian jobs get exported.”
