Come to this information packed session to discover why Listeria monocytogenes is a concern for you. Over the past few years, Listeria monocytogenes has quickly become a significant public health concern. Listeria monocytogenes contamination has been responsible for devastating outbreaks in unlikely produce such as cantaloupes and caramel apples.

Dr. Laura Strawn, Assistant Professor and Extension Specialist of Produce Safety at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, will be sharing her expertise and research findings to provide guidance to growers to better understand and control Listeria monocytogenes contamination risks in the pre-harvest and post-harvest environments.

Ontario fruit grower and candy apple producer, Paul Moyer, from Moyer’s Apple Products, will share his experience controlling this and other potential food safety risks, and how he has successfully added value to his business and overall operation through his proactive approach to food safety.

OMAFRA’s Paul Bailey, from the Food Inspection Branch, will provide background about this problematic pathogen, and share findings of the ministry’s produce and environmental swabbing program from various production sites in Ontario packing sheds.
