Temperature – In almost all areas across the province, the temperature in April was below average and the accumulated growing degree days lagged behind the 10-year average. May has been a different story. Since the beginning of May, these crop degree days have accumulated quickly and nearly all regions across the province have now equaled or surpassed their average DD accumulation for this time of the year. Region specific information can be found below.

Rainfall – We had an average amount of rainfall in March of this year. April was wet in South Western Ontario with all regions above average and some receiving double the average monthly rainfall. May has continued on that trend with many regions above their average rainfall amounts with a few days to go yet.

Crop Updates

Brassica Crops – The degree day threshold for cabbage maggot emergence has not been reached in most areas of the province. It is likely that emergence will happen in the next few days in the Southern tip of the Province.

Carrots – The bulk of carrots have been seeded and early seeded fields are up and growing. This recent stretch of warm weather could be an issue for recently seeded fields and cause some inconsistent germination. Recently emerged carrots are also susceptible to heat canker and burn off in hot weather.

Garlic – Despite the late spring, garlic growth has caught up to previous years with some fields South of London showing scape emergence. Seedcorn maggot damage has been observed in several fields over the past two weeks. The first flight of leek moth is active in areas where leek moth is established. Check stressed plants for mites on the outside of the bulb.

Onion – After a late start all onion fields have been seeded, with a few transplant fields to go. In general, seeded fields are at the flag to first leaf stage with some fields still in the loop stage. Onion and seedcorn maggot flies are active in most areas of Southwestern Ontario. Current trap counts for onion maggot flies in Exeter are low.

Potatoes – After a delayed start, planting has pretty much wrapped up in many areas across the province. Fields that have emerged are growing quickly and the crop is looking good in many parts of South Western Ontario. The risk of survival for volunteer potatoes has been reported as high in Michigan. Be on the lookout for any volunteers as a potential source for late blight inoculum.
